On the road with Pieter Breugel

with Lieselot De Wilde (soprano) and Sofie Vanden Eynde (lute)

Bruegel, undoubtedly the most complete landscape painter of his time, spends most of his life in Flanders. He starts his career in Mechelen and after a three-year delay in Italy, where he visits Naples, Messina, Rome and Venice, he settles in Antwerp. After his marriage, he moves to Brussels, where he will also die.

In this versatile program, soprano Lieselot De Wilde and lute player Sofie Vanden Eynde introduce you to instrumental and vocal music that was heard in all these cities during Brueghel's life.

From Italy we hear lute music by G. Abondante and G. A. da Crema, madrigali by P. Verdelotto and canzone villanesche alla napolitana by A. Willaert. You will be presented with dances and Dutch melancholic love and drinking songs from the Antwerps Liedboek and the “musyck boexkens” by T. Susato. We also find wonderful Dutch songs in the publications of music printer P. Phalèse. With the typical Flemish souterliedekens, we provide a religious counterpart.

However, we should not forget that French chanson was very widespread in 16th century Europe. We browse through P. Attaignant releases and regale you with some renaissance hits.

Music from Breughel's time. As colorful and expressive as his matchless paintings, and as tasty and delicious as a Breughel meal.
